  • FIRE DEPARTMENT PROGRAMS: VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT MOTOR VEHICLE SELF INSURANCE PROGRAM

Through the VFD Motor Vehicle Self Insurance Program, Texas A&M Forest Service provides vehicle liability insurance at a greatly reduced cost.

The 74th Texas Legislature established the Motor Vehicle Self Insurance Program in 1995 and has saved fire departments an estimated $3 million in premiums.

The vehicle insurance coverage offered to qualified VFDs is at coverage levels of $100,000 per person for bodily injury with a maximum of $300,000 per occurrence, and $100,000 for property damage with a maximum of $100,000 per occurrence.

     + Eligibility
Any non-profit VFD operated by its members is eligible and all motor vehicles in the fire department’s fleet are eligible, except ambulances. Vehicles must have a current Texas registration, license plate and vehicle inspection sticker. Authorized drivers must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.

The insured VFD must agree to implement and comply with a risk management and loss prevention program. TFS may inspect the VFD’s vehicles and records and reserves the right to refuse coverage for drivers with poor safety records. Safe driving and favorable claims experiences help to keep premiums low year after year.
